- <p> DIED. PAUL SHULMAN, 72, first commander of the Israeli navy;
- of a heart attack; in Haifa. Shulman, a native of New York State,
- served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before turning to
- smuggling arms and Jewish refugees from Nazi-ravaged Europe
- into postwar Palestine. Shortly after Israel's creation in 1948,
- the seasoned 26-year-old was tapped to lead the infant nation's
- navy through the rough waters of war with its Arab neighbors.
- Shulman's successful blockade of the Gaza Strip and capture
- of the oasis of Ein Gedi secured Israel's crucial hold on the
- Dead Sea's southwestern coast. Shulman went on to serve as an
- adviser to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion.
